What Does it Mean for a College to be “accredited”?

Choosing where to further your education post-matric might not seem to be the hardest thing to do but there are a few very important questions to keep in mind when deciding, such as:

  • Is the institution accredited?
  • Are the courses accredited?
  • What type of qualification can I study?

Doing research on where you might be planning on applying for is important to find one that answers these questions, and one that also fits your lifestyle and needs.

What Does “Accredited” Mean?

The term ‘accreditation’ can be used in two ways. Firstly, the institution you have selected meets the national standards for accreditation.

Secondly, look if the specific course you choose to study meets national regulations and standards and is, therefore, ‘accredited’.

In short, it means that the university, college, vocational college, etc is able to and can offer you the course of your choice and after completion, you will be recognised as having completed the said course.

How To Check If A College Is Registered And Accredited

When deciding on which accredited course you want to apply for, make sure that:

  • The course you are choosing is either accredited or not; and
  • That you fully understand which requirements you must meet, to apply.

If an institution is accredited, its accreditation certificate will be open to view. Either online or in printed media. If you can not view their certificate or it is not available you can try the following:

  • Having a look at their website and finding a downloadable or viewable information brochure that would show if they are accredited or not.
  • Visiting Umalusi’s website to see if they are registered with them.

Visit SAQA and QCTO to check the accreditation status of an institution.

If you’re still not able to find out if an institution is accredited, the National Department of Higher  Education and Training website can provide you with a more detailed list of registered institutions.
