Career Help for Students

Making the right decision about what to study and which career to pursue may seem like a very tough task. It may be one of the most important decisions you will ever have to make. It is necessary to have all the information on the table before you make your choice. So its normal for people looking for Career Help after they finish school.

Most importantly – you have to know yourself. Take time to think about what you like to do, what your interests are, and what you want out of life. This may be a good guide and starting point for students who are about to choose their future career.

Steps to take before making a decision:

  • Identify challenges
  • Identify your strengths and weaknesses, knowledge, values, abilities and interests
  • Gather information about potential future career options
  • Evaluate the pros and cons of each career option
  • Choose the best career option for you – one that you will enjoy
  • Set up a plan of action

Once you have chosen a career, you need to look at your goals. You need to have:

  • Short-term goals
  • Medium-term goals
  • Long-term goals

Your goals will depend on your circumstances and where you are in life. For a school learner in Grade 8, the goals will look something like this:

  • Short-term – do a career test and start evaluating study options
  • Medium-term – visit open days at colleges and find out where, when and how to apply
  • Long-term – study hard to get good marks in order to be accepted into a college

The goals for a working person who wants to further their studies will differ tremendously from those of a school learner, as a working person already has work experience in a certain field, and other obligations to keep in mind.

When setting out goals, make sure that they are reachable, applicable and precise. Review you goals as your situation, career challenges, financial issues and personal life changes.

Questions to ask yourself when planning for your career:

  • When should I begin?
  • Where/how should I start?
  • Who will help me?
  • How will this career benefit me?
