\The basic and most important accreditation is registration with the Department of Education (DoE). If a college is registered with the DoE, you can be assured that the basic content of their courses and the awarded qualifications are legitimate.

This will also enable the college to receive accreditation from other accreditation bodies such as the ICB or QCTO, because a learning institution will not be recognised without a stamp of approval from the DoE. Any further accreditations from other bodies will improve the standard of the courses provided. Accredited institutions are able to offer courses like ICB Business Management which is fully accredited by the ICB, QCTO and registered on the National Qualifications Framework.

How can I be sure that a learning institution is registered as an FET College?

Visit the Department of Higher Education’s main website to double check that a college is registered and to view their accreditation status. You can also email them on the site if you want more information regarding their reputation or other issues. Alternatively, you can phone them (012 312 5878) or send a fax (012 323 8817).

The Department of Education deals with every stage of education in South Africa – Basic, Further and Higher. They regulate the amount of educators in each area and institution, the content of qualifications, and the services given to learners.

\After a training provider has been approved by the DoE, they can apply for SETA accreditation (Skills Education and Training Authority). SETA regulates qualifications in different sectors of businesses and industries, e.g. Service, Agriculture, Finance, etc.

If you are looking for a qualification that is specific to a sector in South Africa, it is a good idea to visit the websites of the different SETA’s, in order to find training providers that are accredited for that sector. Visit the SETA website to find out more about the different SETA’s in South Africa.

A learning provider that is confident about their accreditation statuses will most likely have a page on their website displaying these credentials.
